The red dwarf honey bee is a small, wild honey bee that lives in southern and southeastern Asia. It is one of the smallest honey bees and builds its nest in the open, on branches, instead of inside a hive. It is an important pollinator in many parts of its range.1

It lives in forests and forested areas at lower elevations. Its single comb hangs open on tree branches or shrubs, often in dense foliage. It also pollinates tropical fruit crops in Thailand.1

A worker is 7 to 10 mm long.1
Its overall colour is red-brown.1
Old workers have a red first abdomen segment.1
It builds one exposed comb, usually on a branch or shrub.1

常被誤認為： Apis andreniformis, its sister species, is generally darker. In old bees, the first abdomen segment is completely black, while in this species it is red.1

牠害怕時會做什麼？

When it senses predators, it hisses, shimmers and nests in dense foliage to hide, and it can produce a sticky barrier to block raiding ants.1

A colony defends itself with a warning call called piping, which is answered by a loud, coordinated hissing from the whole colony.1

It recycles wax from an old nest when it builds a new one close by, a behaviour other honey bees do not show.1

Its waggle dance is performed on the horizontal top of the comb, where the comb wraps around the branch, not on a vertical face as in many other honey bees.1

A colony was recorded in Malta in 2024, the first fully established colony ever found in Europe.1

Its main natural enemy is the O. smaragdina weaver ant.1
