The Sind krait is a highly venomous snake from the cobra family. It lives in parts of Bangladesh, northwestern India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is easy to miss, because its banded colouring and stillness help it blend in.1

Sind kraits are mostly active at night and often cross paths with people and domestic animals. In India they have been recorded in the states of Sindh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan.1

  • Black above and white below.1
  • Narrow white bands along the body. In some colour variants the bands are yellow or grey.1
  • Young snakes have white spots on about a third of the body instead of bands. The bands develop as the snake matures.1
  • Egg-shaped head with a short snout, small eyes with vertically oval pupils, and a pointed tail tip.1

The Sind krait is highly venomous. Most people who are bitten never see the snake. Many bites happen when a person accidentally steps on it, or when someone tries to scare or kill it after it has shown itself.1
