The Xingu River ray is a freshwater stingray that lives only in the Xingu River basin in Brazil. It likes clear water over rocky riverbeds. It has a venomous spine in its tail, so it is one to admire from a distance.1

  • Deeper black above than its relative P. henlei1
  • Fewer and larger yellowish-white spots on the upper side than P. albimaculata1
  • Underparts are mostly brownish-dusky1
  • Females grow larger than males1

常被誤認為： It is closely related to P. henlei from the Tocantins River basin and P. albimaculata from the Tapajós River basin, and they look similar. P. henlei has a large white centre on its underparts, while this species has mostly brownish-dusky underparts. P. albimaculata has more spots above, and they are smaller than the spots on this species.1

The venom is held in a dentine spine on the tail. Its composition stays the same as the ray matures, but its toxicity decreases as the ray gets older.1
