The common bombardier beetle is a small ground beetle, about the size of a grain of rice. When disturbed, it sprays a hot, explosive-sounding chemical mix from its rear end to drive attackers away. It lives in parts of Europe, central and west Asia, and northern Africa, including southern England and southern Wales.1
