The Asian stinging catfish is a freshwater fish that can give a painful sting with the spine on its fin. It lives in ponds, ditches, swamps and marshes across South Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. It matters to people because it is an important catch for local fisheries and is also farmed and sold in the aquarium trade.1

It is found mainly in ponds, ditches, swamps and marshes, and sometimes in muddy rivers. It can tolerate slightly brackish water. It breeds in confined waters during the monsoon, and in ponds, derelict ponds and ditches when enough rainwater collects.1
