The black-headed coral snake is a venomous snake from northern South America. It lives in forests, mostly at heights between 100 and 600 metres above sea level. Its almost completely black head is one of the features that helps tell it apart.1

It has no nuchal ring, which is a band around the back of the neck.1
It has relatively few black rings on the body, and these rings are not grouped in threes (triads).1
