The Cauca coral snake is a venomous snake from north-western South America. It lives in forests and spends much of its time underground and in leaf litter. Its bold black and red rings are its best clue to its identity.1

  • Bicoloured, with alternating black and red rings of roughly equal width.1
  • The red rings may be orangish and include some black-tipped dorsal scales.1
  • Very high number of ventral scales: up to 325 in females and up to 295 in males.1
  • Medium-sized for its genus. The single measured specimen was 84.2 cm long including the tail.1
