The Central Asian pit viper is a venomous snake that lives across northern Asia. It is a fairly stout snake, and its bite can harm people. Its scientific name is Gloydius intermedius.1

  • The body is relatively stout, and the snout is not upturned.1
  • The colour pattern varies, but usually has 28 to 45 dark blotches or crossbands running down the back and flanks.1
  • Light, irregular areas lie between the dark blotches.1
  • A dark brown to black stripe runs from behind the eye to the angle of the jaw, outlined by a light line above and cream-coloured scales below.1
