The lowland hump-nosed pit viper is a venomous snake that lives only in Sri Lanka. It is a pit viper, a group of snakes that have heat-sensing pits between their eyes and nostrils. It is one of the species that Sri Lankan snake experts have to tell apart from its close relative, Hypnale nepa.1

Body colour ranges from yellowish brown to dark brown, and sometimes deep red.1
Two rows of distinct blotches run along the back and meet in the middle, each blotch sub-oval or sub-triangular in shape.1
A dark stripe runs across the eye and cheek.1
The belly is lighter than the back and is sometimes light ash-grey.1
Small, wart-like bumps on the tip of the snout carry a group of 10 to 19 small scales.1
