The Shedao island pit viper is a venomous snake that lives only on Shedao Island, off the coast of northeastern China. The island is very small, but it has an extraordinarily large population of these snakes. Scientists are interested in it because it is found nowhere else in the world.1

It eats small passerine birds of many species, which pass over the island in May and September. It ambushes them on the ground or from tree branches, holding the front of its body in a concertina shape.1
