The southern coral snake is a highly venomous snake that lives in eastern South America. It is one of the main causes of coral snake bites in the south-east of the continent. Its bright red, black and white rings make it easy to pick out, though its venom is strong.1

It prefers humid forests, tropical and subtropical deciduous forests, savannas, sandy and rocky areas, and secondary vegetation such as pastures and farmland, close to marshes and streams. It lives in lowlands from sea level up to 700 m, and digs in loose soil or plant litter.1

  • Wide red rings are separated by narrower black triads, each made of three black rings divided by white rings.1
  • The red scales have black tips.1
  • The tail has two complete black triads.1
  • The colour of the head varies, with a grey pigment on the top of the snout.1
  • Adults are usually 65 to 100 cm long, including the tail.1

Its venom contains neurotoxins, which attack the nerves and block signals to the muscles. Symptoms can appear within minutes, starting with swelling and tingling at the bite site. Drooping eyelids, double vision, facial paralysis, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and weakness usually follow. In severe cases, breathing can stop and the patient needs artificial ventilation.1

It has been one of the main accident-causing coral snakes in south-eastern South America. It is not relatively aggressive towards humans. The estimated lethal dose of venom for an adult human is only 5 to 7 mg (dry weight).1
