The spitting spider is a small spider that catches its prey by spitting sticky, venomous silk over it. It is found in many parts of the world, and it often lives in houses, where it wanders about at night.1

It is frequently found in houses, where it wanders about at night. In South Africa it lives in grassland and savanna, from 68 to 1444 m above sea level. It is often collected from under stones and in dark places on the soil surface.1

It hunts mainly at night, when many insects are less active. It creeps up on its prey, measures the distance with one front leg, then squeezes its body and spits two silk threads in a zigzag over the victim. Larger prey may be spat on several times.1

Its silk glands in the front of the body (cephalothorax) are linked to its venom glands, so it can make venomous silk.1

It stops about 10 mm from its prey and measures the distance with one front leg before it spits, so as not to disturb the victim.1

It is thought to find prey using long hearing hairs on its legs.1
