The Venezuela coral snake is a venomous snake with bright black, red and white (or yellow) rings. It lives in forests, savannas and shrublands in northern South America, usually near water. Its venom is potent enough to kill its prey.1

  • Black, red and white (or yellow) rings, like most coral snakes1
  • The black rings are arranged in groups of three (triads), and the first triad is complete1
  • The white rings are usually slightly wider than the black rings1
  • The dorsal scales of the red and white rings have black tips1
  • Adults usually measure 48–70 cm in total length, including the tail1

It has a potent venom that it uses to kill its prey. When milked in a laboratory, the average venom yield is 9 mg (dry weight), which is more than the estimated lethal dose for an adult human of 5–7 mg.1
